Introduction

The Northwest boasts around 40,000 students participating in higher and further education. 50% of the area’s young people go on to enter third-level education highlighting the significant supply of well-educated young talent. The region’s educational institutions are also pro-actively working to meet the evolving skills need of employers and to establish industry relevant research.

University of Ulster: Magee (Derry)
  • 4,000 students at present with plans to expand to 6,000 studentsSpecialisms include Computing and Engineering, Business, Finance and Management, Creative Arts, Law and Social Sciences and Life and Health Sciences
  • Expansion plans over the next three years include new Institutes of Sustainable Technology, Health and Well-being. Student number increases are planned in Computing and Electronics, Creative Technologies and Animation, and Business and Professional Services
University of Ulster: Coleraine Campus
  •  5000 students at present
  •  Specialisms include Business, Finance & Management, Computing and Engineering, Bio-Medical science.

North West Regional College (NWRC)

  • A pool of 25,000 students in full or part-time study
  • A Centre of Excellence in Software Engineering and provision of numerous career-relevant topics including IT, Business and Administration, Engineering and Construction, Hospitality and Creative Arts

 Donegal: Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT)

  • 3000 students
  • Specialisms including Computing and Business, Law, Tourism, Engineering and Creative Design and Digital Media

University of Ulster Intelligent Systems Research Centre (ISRC), (Derry):
Opened in 2007, the ISRC is a major contributor to international research in the areas of computational intelligence, virtual worlds, computer gaming, neuro-engineering and bio-inspired computing. It is the largest research investment in the 150-year history of the campus, and attracts scientists of international calibre from across the world, positioning Northern Ireland as a world leader in intelligent systems.

The Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Centre (C-TRIC), (Derry):
A unique facility promoting translational and clinical research, to reduce both time to market and the costs associated with the development of innovative health technologies, medical devices and therapeutics. C-TRIC’s unique infrastructure and key support staff facilitate clinical research and innovation, enabling the streamlining of developments from the laboratory to the market place through a focused 'bench to point of care' approach.

University of Ulster Centre for Bio-medical Sciences, (Coleraine):
Centre of Excellence in Biomedical Research, the UK’s top-rated unit for Biomedical Sciences Research. The School of Biomedical Sciences attained the highest possible rating of 5* in its recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), demonstrating international excellence and placing the University first in the United Kingdom.

NW Regional College (Derry, Strabane, Limavady):
The College holds Centre of Excellence status for three of its curriculum areas in Construction & the Built Environment, Software Engineering and Journalism. This recognition involves greater cooperation between the College and local industry, and reinforces the quality of provision.

Letterkenny IT:
Key research areas include Applied Research in Biotechnology, Renewable / Alternative Energy, Computer Games / Digital Animation, Electronics, Production and Innovation Technology and Fire Technology
